Dentistry for Children

We create smiles for all ages, including the smallest of smiles. Children sometimes require different procedures, and we can treat your whole family at one office, which adds up to extra convenience.

We can care for your child as they grow from a baby to a young adult.

We are very family friendly and offer:

  • toys in the reception room and TV’s in every treatment room to make the visit fun
  • children’s sunglasses to wear
  • bubblegum or cherry tooth polishes to make the cleaning pleasant
  • a new toothbrush and a prize.

As always, we encourage good brushing and nutrition to keep kids healthy.

The American Dental Association recommends a child’s first visit when the first tooth erupts as a well-baby check. This is a good opportunity for parents to ask questions and seek advice.

We strongly advise you not to give bottles at bedtime. Juice and milk have natural sugars that quickly rot baby teeth so it is important to only give water at bedtime.

We like to see children around the age of two for a visit to “get a ride in the chair”, quickly “count” the teeth and polish if all is going well, and get a new toothbrush and a prize. This positive experience sets the tone for a lifetime of preventive care and a healthy mouth.

Fluoride is recommended in-office to protect current teeth in the mouth whereas fluoride supplements are recommended to strengthen developing teeth currently growing in the jawbone. Parents can discuss this with the dental staff to make the best decisions for their child.

Panoramic x-rays show developing teeth in the jaw-bone. We recommend a screening at age six to make sure all the permanent teeth are present and developing. This is important to know, because when permanent teeth are missing, we want to take extra good care of the baby teeth.

Sealants fill in the deep grooves of first adult molars, which usually erupt around age six; the process is easy for the patient and is very effective as a preventive measure against decay.

Children should have a pre-orthodontic screening by the age of seven. At this young age they may benefit from a small retainer-like device that helps the jaw grow a little more quickly to make room for grown-up teeth, to keep them from crowding. Children with a thumb-sucking habit after the age of 6 can also be helped by ortho-appliances.

Panorex screenings are also recommended around age 12 to evaluate for traditional orthodontics. We provide traditional “braces” at our office as well. Panorex screenings are recommended around age 18 to check for wisdom teeth. Many people do not have room so it is a good idea to check.

Sealants

Sealants are a plastic coating easily applied to the deep grooves of permanent molars to prevent decay. Sealants should be considered for children around ages 6 and 12 when permanent molars are present in the very back of the mouth. Sealants can wear and need to be touched up or reapplied every few years but most commonly they last for several years without needing any maintenance. We check them at every visit. Our material is free of Bisphenol-A.

The most effective and easiest way to whiten teeth is with a custom-made tray and prescription strength whitening gel offered in our take-home kit. Please ask about whitening at your next check-up and we can check your shade and give you the information you need to get started.

Dental Assistant Joie explains how easy it is to brighten your teeth using our custom-made take-home whitening kit.
