Crochet Comfort: A Peppermint Swirl Blanket for the Perfect Chill
I was floored when I first saw the Crochet Peppermint Afghan in the summer of 2014 . Designed by Bendy Carter, this afghan is so incredible that it inspired me beyond belief. I knew instantly this was an afghan a crocheter could fall in love with.
The looks are a bit deceiving as you may think you need to make 42 large motifs and be done with it. While all motifs are the same from rounds 1 - 11, the final round is different. Motifs have been assigned a number between 1 - 6. The edging is changed so the spirals can appear twisting instead of all 42 motifs being the same. However, if you were to do all 42 motifs with the same edging, I don't think it's a deal-breaker.
If you're feeling adventurous, you could try creating a fringe border. This unique option will give your blanket a fun and playful look. To do this, you will need to learn how to inlay fringes throughout the design. The fringes will travel in a zigzag pattern to resemble peppermint sticks, while the red background fills in the blank spaces for a textured effect.
Finally, you could add a simple crochet border in a contrasting colour. For example, if your blanket is mainly red and white, you could add a border in green to make it really pop. This is a quick and easy way to finish off your blanket, and it will give it a nice neat edge.

The candy cane swirl crochet blanket is a fun and festive project, perfect for adding a touch of holiday cheer to your home. While the traditional design features red and white stripes, there are many ways to put a modern twist on this classic pattern.
One idea is to incorporate different colours into the design. For example, instead of the standard red and white, you could try using shades of turquoise, guacamole, coral, or even pixelated squares of colour for a retro gaming feel. Adding a third colour, such as green, is another way to update the traditional pattern, giving it a vintage feel and added depth.
You can also play with the scale of the pattern. For a modern take, try a giant candy cane stripe pattern, or go in the opposite direction and opt for a more delicate, fine stripe. This could be achieved by using thinner yarn and a smaller hook to create a lacy, lightweight blanket.
Another way to modernise the candy cane swirl blanket is to experiment with different textures. Try adding fluffy or fringed elements to give the blanket a cosy, tactile appeal. You could also crochet a 3D candy cane design, with raised stripes that really pop.
Finally, why not try combining the candy cane swirl pattern with other shapes? You could create a pixelated effect, or even weave in some classic Christmas motifs, like trees, bells, or wreaths, for a unique and whimsical design.
With so many ways to put a modern twist on the traditional candy cane swirl crochet blanket, you can create a fun, festive project that's sure to become a holiday favourite.
