Create a Stunning Macrame Plant Hanger: Easy DIY Project for Small Spaces

All About Macrame

Macrame is a decorative knotting craft that anyone can do with just a little bit of practice! It’s is a great way to create beautiful and functional pieces of art – like wall hangings, plant hangers, curtains, and more. Macrame has been popular in many time periods, from Arabic weavers in the 13th century, to the Victorian era, to the 1970s. So, it’s no surprise that macrame plant hanger projects are on-trend once again. Macramé has a reputation of being difficult to do, but it’s really not that hard to get started. You don’t need a lot of special tools, just some cotton cord and a willingness to learn. After that, you’re ready to learn how to macrame. Start by practicing the basic macrame knots. Did you know even the most complicated macrame projects are made of the same simple knots? (You may even recognize some of the knots from making friendship bracelets.)

  • Macramé cord. Most importantly, you’ll need a cotton cord that’s suitable for macrame. I prefer to use a 100% plied cotton rope that measures 4mm in diameter.
  • Scissors
  • Small plant pot. I used a terracotta pot that is 4.5″ tall and 5″ wide. Try to find a pot that is similar in size.
  • Measuring tape
  • Wooden or metal ring (optional). Many people like to start their macrame plant hangers with a small wooden ring. If you don’t have a ring, I’ll show you another cool way to start your plant hanger with a buttonhole loop.

For this simple plant hanger, we’ll be creating the design with basic knots only. For a different look, you could add wooden beads in between some of the knots.

Supplies for DIY Macrame Plant Hanger

  • 8 x 370 cm / 146 inches Cream 3mm 3-ply cords by Nook Theory
  • 2 X 50 cm / 20 inches Cream 3mm 3-ply cords by Nook Theory for making 2 gathering knots
  • 4 x 250 cm / 100 inches Lilac 3mm 3-ply cords by Nook Theory
  • 1 x small wooden or metal ring
  • 1 x small pot (mine is 9cm / 3.5 inches from Ikea)

Step 1: Fold your 8 white cords in half and pull them through your ring. Make a Gathering Knot to attach them.

Step 2: This plant hanger has 4 sections for which the pattern repeats. Select 4 white cords that are close to each other and make a square knot.

Step 3: Work in the purple cord by placing it behind the two middle white cords and in front of the 2 outer white cords. Attach the purple cords back to the s-hooks. Make another square knot with the 4 white cords

Step 4: Take your purple cord, form a cross over the square knot you’ve just created, place them behind the two outer white cords and attach them back to the s-hooks. Make another square knot with the white cords.

Step 5: Take the purple cord down from the s-hooks. To make sure you see a cross knot on the back of each section, cross the purple cord behind the last square knot you’ve just made.

Now pull the purple cord in front of the two outer white cords again and attach them back to the s-hooks. You’ve now completed a full series of X-knots.

Step 6: Repeat this pattern until you have 13 purple X-knots on the front of each section.

Step 7: To attach all sections together, skip about 6cm (this depends on your pot size) and take the 3 inner cords from each section so you have two purple cords in the middle and 2 white cords on the outside.

Make sure the sections are straight and not twisted before you continue. Form a square knot with the outer white cords around the inner 4 cords.

Step 8: Make sure your pot fits before you continue finishing off the pattern. For my pot to fit, I skipped about 8cm before I made the final Gathering Knot.

Cut off your access cords and voila, you’re done!

A simple Macrame Plant Hanger DIY tutorial!

Materials

  • Macrame cord - 8 pieces 12 feet long and 2 pieces 4 feet long
  • Ring

Tools

  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Loop all 8 of your 12 feet cord through the ring so they fold in half at the center of the string.
  2. Create your gathering knot.
Using one of the 4 feet pieces of string, have one end of the string facing up toward the ring
  3. Then you'll want to create a small "u" shape with the cord leaving a nice long tail.Wrap the tail tightly around the "u", making as long of a wrap as you want! Once you have as long of a wrap as you want, take the end of the tail and thread it through the loop. Then take the top tail and pull it tight, cinching up the loop! Pull it so it's nice and tight and so the knot goes behind the wrapped part. Trim off the extra threads and the top is done!
  4. 3. Separate the 16 cords into groups of 4.
  5. 4. Add square knots to the top.

Here's how to do a square knot.
  1. Bring the left cord over the middle 2 cords.
  2. Take the far right cord and bring it over the left cord.
  3. Then tuck the right cord under the middle 2 cords.
  4. Lastly bring it up through the loop on the left side.
  5. Then you're going to do the same thing but starting with the right cord.
  6. Bring the right cord over the middle 2 cords.
  7. Take the far left cord and bring it over the right cord.
  8. Then tuck the left cord under the middle 2 cords.
  9. Lastly bring it up through the loop on the right side.
