Create a Stunning Macrame Plant Hanger: Easy DIY Project for Small Spaces
Macrame is a decorative knotting craft that anyone can do with just a little bit of practice! It’s is a great way to create beautiful and functional pieces of art – like wall hangings, plant hangers, curtains, and more. Macrame has been popular in many time periods, from Arabic weavers in the 13th century, to the Victorian era, to the 1970s. So, it’s no surprise that macrame plant hanger projects are on-trend once again. Macramé has a reputation of being difficult to do, but it’s really not that hard to get started. You don’t need a lot of special tools, just some cotton cord and a willingness to learn. After that, you’re ready to learn how to macrame. Start by practicing the basic macrame knots. Did you know even the most complicated macrame projects are made of the same simple knots? (You may even recognize some of the knots from making friendship bracelets.)
For this simple plant hanger, we’ll be creating the design with basic knots only. For a different look, you could add wooden beads in between some of the knots.
Step 1: Fold your 8 white cords in half and pull them through your ring. Make a Gathering Knot to attach them.
Step 2: This plant hanger has 4 sections for which the pattern repeats. Select 4 white cords that are close to each other and make a square knot.
Step 3: Work in the purple cord by placing it behind the two middle white cords and in front of the 2 outer white cords. Attach the purple cords back to the s-hooks. Make another square knot with the 4 white cords
Step 4: Take your purple cord, form a cross over the square knot you’ve just created, place them behind the two outer white cords and attach them back to the s-hooks. Make another square knot with the white cords.
Step 5: Take the purple cord down from the s-hooks. To make sure you see a cross knot on the back of each section, cross the purple cord behind the last square knot you’ve just made.
Now pull the purple cord in front of the two outer white cords again and attach them back to the s-hooks. You’ve now completed a full series of X-knots.
Step 6: Repeat this pattern until you have 13 purple X-knots on the front of each section.
Step 7: To attach all sections together, skip about 6cm (this depends on your pot size) and take the 3 inner cords from each section so you have two purple cords in the middle and 2 white cords on the outside.
Make sure the sections are straight and not twisted before you continue. Form a square knot with the outer white cords around the inner 4 cords.
Step 8: Make sure your pot fits before you continue finishing off the pattern. For my pot to fit, I skipped about 8cm before I made the final Gathering Knot.
Cut off your access cords and voila, you’re done!
