When choosing yarn, I wanted the warmth and quality of a natural wool fiber that can be easily washed. As a result, my scarf sample was knit in Cascade 128 Superwash Merino Wool in the aqua blue color Pacific 1960, which required 4 skeins total.

Yarn Weight Substitution

If you prefer to knit with worsted weight #4 yarn, you may follow this pattern by knitting double-stranded to achieve the same bulky gauge.

Yarn Substitution Recommendations

  • Plymouth Yarn Encore Chunky
  • Berroco Vintage Chunky
  • Knit Picks Swish Bulky
  • Cascade Yarns Pacific Chunky

Hot Frosty’s Magical Scarf

In Netflix’s Hot Frosty, a magical scarf becomes the heart of the story. Kathy learns that good things come to you when you’re out in the cold after sharing her gifted knitwear with a snowman named Jack during the holiday season.

Holiday movies are perfect when I’m in the mood for a simple, sweet, and predictable plot. As a knitter, I love that it was the power of a scarf that sparked second chances, helping our main characters find their happily-ever-after. (but, of course!)

Step 3: Knit a Mini Gauge Swatch

Scrub ahead to the 17:11 mark in the video above to see how to knit and measure your swatch.

Now it’s time for some math! Not the hard stuff that’ll make you cringe and cry. Just some basic middle school math.

We’ll use the below formula to figure out how many stitches to cast on to get your ideal cowl width. If you want to hear me talk you through this process, scrub ahead to the 16:05 mark in the video above.

A = number of stitches that make up 4″

For me, using my yarn and a 10mm needle, 13 sts = 4″

B = ideal cowl circumference

For me, I want my finished cowl to be 25″

Divide B by 4″ (For me: 25 / 4 = 6.25)

Multiply that number by A (For me, 6.25 x 13 = 81.25)

That’s your number of cast on stitches!

If you’re knitting a cowl, round up to get an odd, whole number. I can’t cast on 0.25 of a stitch, so I need to round up or down to a whole number. Seed stitch in the round requires an odd number, so for me, I rounded up to 83.

So now I know that in order to get a cowl with a width of 25″ with my particular yarn and needles, I need to cast on 83 stitches. That’s my magic number!

Scarf Pattern Dimension

Pattern Size: This full-sized adult knitted scarf size is designed at 10 inches (25 cm) wide and 70 inches (178 cm) long.

Width: This is a replica design, inspired by the movie Hot Frosty. When the thrift shop owner Mel gifts Kathy with the deep red textured scarf, it looks to be of standard-sized width. However, while Jack adorns the scarf, it is usually folded lengthwise, creating a thinner width.

Length: In the movie, Jack’s scarf looks to be exceptionally long at over 90 inches (229 cm) in size. While draped over his neck, it hangs to the ground! If you wish to knit it up similarly, add another 128 yards (117 meters) of yarn to your shopping cart. However, if this will be a scarf for everyday use, the recommended 70 inch (178 cm) length is a comfortable size for most adults.
