Crochet Foundation Single Crochet: Learn This Essential Technique for Beginners
Learning how to do the foundation single crochet (Fsc) is one of the best crochet technique that you can learn as a crocheter. It’s my absolute favourite way to begin a new crochet project – a chainless way!
This is a technique of starting a crochet project that creates the foundation chains and the first row of single crochet at the same time. WOW!
Because you are not working a traditional starting chains and then single crochet row into that base chain. Instead, you will create each chain and the corresponding single crochet stitch on top of it simultaneously.

Level: Easy
1. Begin with a slip knot on your crochet hook, then chain two.
2. Insert your hook into the first chain stitch.
3. Yarn over and pull up one loop. You should have two loops on the hook when you complete this step.
4. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first loop on your hook. The yarn you just pulled through is actually a chain stitch. Go ahead and add a removable stitch marker to this chain stitch so you don’t forget.
5. Yarn over and pull through both of the loops on your hook to make a single crochet. You should have one loop on the hook when you complete this step. You’ve just finished your first foundation crochet stitch.
6. Remember how you made a chain in Step 4? That’s the chain you’ll now be working into next. Insert your crochet hook into the space between the chain and the single crochet.
7. Yarn over and pull up one loop. You should have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first loop on your hook. You’ve just made your next chain stitch. Now’s a good time to move the stitch marker and place it around this chain stitch (as in the photo above).
Most crocheters have come across the Foundation Single Crochet stitch, which are the most common of the different crochet foundation stitches.
However, you can crochet chainless foundation stitches using the same theory for all the basic crochet stitches, such as for half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc) and treble crochet (tr).
You could even crochet foundation stitches for the taller of the basic stitches, like the double treble crochet.
Below you can find written instructions and links to detailed step by step stitch tutorials, with a photo and video tutorial for the foundation single crochet, foundation half double crochet, foundation double crochet and foundation treble crochet.

The FSC stitches is a great way to crochet the foundation chains and the first single crochet row at the same time.
