Simple shell border

A simple shell crochet border is a great way to add a classic look to your crochet blanket. This type of crochet edging is perfect for baby blankets and adds a bit of a ruffled look. Using a solid colour yarn in a contrasting shade will also add a pop of colour.

To start, make a slip stitch into the first stitch of your edge. Then, miss a stitch and work 5 treble stitches into the next stitch. Miss another stitch and then slip stitch into the next stitch to create the shell. Repeat this process along the edge of your blanket. At the corner, you can work 7 treble stitches for a more dramatic effect.

If you want to keep things simple, a basic shell crochet border can be created by working several stitches into a single stitch. To keep the rest of your work flat, you will need to miss one or more base stitches in the row below.

For a slightly more complex shell border, you can try the following:

Round 1: Work a single crochet into each stitch around the blanket, working 3 SC into each corner space. Join the round ch 1 and turn.

Round 2: 1 SC, *SK next SC, 5 DC into next SC, SK next SC, 1 SC into next SC,* repeat *to the end. Join with a slip stitch to the starting SC, tie off and weave in the ends.

The herringbone stitch is a texture-rich stitch that is designed to mimic a similar stitch in knitting. It creates a beautiful repeating design that has both a classic and contemporary feel. The stitch gets its name from the natural design of the spine of the herring fish, with the basic design imitating the organic shape of the fish bones coming off the spine.

One variation of the stitch is the Herringbone Single Crochet (HSC) stitch, which is a popular choice for its knit-like texture. To create this stitch:

> Insert the hook through the vertical bar of the previous single crochet stitch, insert into the next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Another variation is the Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC) stitch, which is just one step different from a double crochet. To create this stitch:

> Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through the first loop on the hook, then YO and pull through the remaining two loops.

The herringbone stitch can be used to create a variety of items, from home decor to garments, and is a great way to add texture and visual interest to your crochet projects.
