Supplies

You will need:

  • Mod Podge. You can use any white glue that dries transparently and mix it with some water. Or you simply use Mod Podge. (Amazon link)
  • Box cutter knife. You will need a box cutter to trim the edges of your decoupage paper.
  • Some Paper. You will need some paper. Regular printing paper can work but I recommend very thin photo paper. (Amazon link)
  • Color Printer. The color printer is used to print your designs on the paper.
  • A paintbrush. I use an old paintbrush to apply the Mod Podge.
  • Some fine-grit sandpaper. The sandpaper is used to sand down the edges of the paper.
  • Acrylic paint. You will need some acrylic paint to touch up the corners and edges.
  • Coaster Set. You will also need a set of simple wooden coasters. I cut mine myself on a laser cutter but you can get something similar on Amazon.

Are you a Harry Potter fan looking for a fun and creative way to bring a bit of magic into your home? Look no further! In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to make your own custom Harry Potter coasters using decoupage. This easy and budget-friendly DIY project is perfect for fans of all ages. Whether you want to showcase your favorite quotes, house crests, or iconic symbols from the Wizarding World, these coasters are as practical as they are enchanting. Let’s get to it!

I have a separate Decoupage beginners tutorial that you can read right here if you are new to Decoupage.

Step 4: Paint Edges

Next, we will fix the edges of the coasters by painting them. In my case, the edges need to be painted black as all of my designs are on a black background.

This step might get a little more difficult if your design is more colorful. In this case, you have to mix the acrylic paint as closely as possible and then apply it.

Step 3: Cut Overhang and Sand Edges

Once the glue is dry, turn the coasters over and use the box cutter to remove any overhanging paper.

It doesn´t need to be perfect yet. Just try to get it as close as possible.

Next, we will use some fine-grain sandpaper to sand down the last bit of overhanging paper.

Don´t worry if the edges appear white, we will fix that in the next step.
