You can also make pipe cleaner candy canes and hang them on the tree!

Handprint Salt Dough Ornaments

Salt dough ornaments make perfect keepsakes of your toddler’s tiny handprints during the holiday season.

To make this classic craft, you’ll need 4 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 1.5 cups of warm water. Mix these ingredients until you have a smooth, pliable dough.

Roll out your dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut circles using a large cookie cutter. Help your toddler press their hand firmly into the dough, then carefully cut around the impression.

This engaging activity has become a cherished holiday tradition for many families.

Once cooled, let your toddler paint their creation and add sparkly decorations. Seal with clear varnish to preserve the handprint, then thread a festive ribbon through the hole.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Should Paint Dry Between Layers for Christmas Crafts?

For thin layers, wait 20-30 minutes between coats. If you’re working with thicker paint applications, allow 1-2 hours of drying time.

Factors like humidity and room temperature can affect drying time, so test with a gentle touch before adding new layers.

What Alternatives Can Replace Salt Dough for Children With Gluten Sensitivities?

You can replace traditional salt dough with several gluten-free alternatives for safe ornament-making.

Try using gluten-free all-purpose flour mixed with salt and water, or create dough using almond flour.

Paper crafts, felt decorations, and natural materials like pinecones offer excellent substitutes.

Dried fruits and nuts can also be used to make beautiful wreaths, and gluten-free play dough is suitable for moldable projects.

Can Outdoor Materials Like Pinecones Be Safely Used in Indoor Crafts?

Like nature’s gift-wrapped treasures, pinecones can be safely used in indoor crafts with proper preparation.

It would be best to clean them first by soaking them in water and soap and thoroughly drying them.

When crafting, place a large rag underneath to catch debris, and always supervise toddlers to prevent them from putting pieces in their mouths. Make sure you’re collecting pinecones from safe, pesticide-free areas.

Which Craft Supplies Are Safe if Accidentally Swallowed by Toddlers?

While craft supplies should not be swallowed, you should stick with non-toxic options like Eco-Dough natural play dough, organic finger paint powders, and food-based paints mixed with yoghurt.

These materials won’t harm your toddler if accidentally ingested. Honey Sticks crayons, made with food pigments, are also safe.

How Can Crafts Be Preserved to Last Multiple Holiday Seasons?

If you want your cherished holiday crafts to bring joy year after year, you must use them properly to protect them from damage.

Use sturdy containers with acid-free tissue paper to store your creations in a cool, dry place. Remember to wrap each item individually and label everything clearly.

Use padded dividers and store fabric crafts in breathable bags for delicate pieces to prevent moisture buildup.
