  Desde 2009 (como publicamos en "Orígenes"), la portada de nuestro Libro de Juegos ha sido el excelente mosaico romano de gladiadores del Museo Arqueológico Nacional.

  La semana pasada, estuvimos recopilando decenas de imágenes de retiarii, destinadas a documentar la nueva miniatura de la Retiaria; y tuvimos la suerte, el domingo 3 de agosto, de asistir a una interesante charla divulgativa en el Museo Arqueológico Nacional, por la arqueóloga Mª Ángeles Sánchez, sobre dicho mosaico (la "pieza del mes" de agosto).

  Se trata de un emblema, un cuadro musivo figurado encastrado en otro pavimento de menor calidad, y que su dueño podía llevar consigo como si fuera un bien mueble. La escena debe leerse de abajo a arriba, como un cómic de dos viñetas. En el registro inferior, el secutor Astyanax, en lucha con el retiarius Kalendio, es apresado en su red; el árbitro (summa rudis) observa el combate desde la arena. En el registro superior (separada la "viñeta" mediante un tridente) Astyanax, pese a seguir enredado, obtiene la victoria en el combate ("VICIT"), mientras Kalendio, derribado, levanta su pugio en señal de rendición y recibe la muerte, marcándole como obitus ( Ø ).

  Durante la charla, se mostraron imágenes de otras piezas arqueológicas; entre ellas, el relieve de Halicarnaso de las gladiadoras Achillia y Amazona (dos "Escudos Grandes" desprovistas de yelmo), hoy en el British Museum.
