Another cute idea is to braid part of the gnome’s mustache. This look reminds me a bit of Vikings, doesn’t it? I think it is so cute.

Macrame Gnome Pattern and Tutorial

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I like to challenge myself with new craft mediums and this year, I’ve taken a shine to macramé (the art of knotting cord or string to make decor and art). I’m still a beginner, so you can be guaranteed this is an easy macrame project!

I’ve shared another macrame project for Christmas here (it’s adorable and uses ALL Dollar Tree items). If you’re new to this, check that out because it’s even easier than this Christmas macramé.

And even though the Taffleberry video (linked below) is made very differently, I had the idea for this macrame gnome because that hat was TOO cute. So, I ordered up some cord, put on an Audible book, and got to work!

These are so cute! Could you share the size wooden ring you used?
How about a link to where you found the beads with the large hole?

Hi Kristine, I did link to them all under the craft supplies needed list. You just have to click on the underlined links. I just checked and the links are working.

How to Make a Macrame Gnome Video

You’ll start by making the gnome’s hat. For the hat, you’ll need about 40 pieces of yarn that are 11 inches long. Instead of measuring them out piece by piece, you can fold a sheet of heavy weight paper (like card stock) in quarters to make a template. Wrap the yarn around the template, wrapping 40 times, making sure you are wrapping it around the longer direction. Then slide the yarn off the template and cut through it at the bottom. That will give you 40 pieces of string 11 inches long.

Next, cut a 3/4 inch wide piece off the end of an empty toilet paper tube. You’ll use very simple macrame knots to attach the yarn to the tube. Grab one piece of yarn and fold it in half, creating a loop. Slide the loop inside the piece of tube, as shown below.

Then reach through the loop with fingers on your right hand and grab the tail ends of the yarn. Pull them through the loop and out to the right as shown.
