The inspiration for this chunky crochet cowl pattern was the alpine stitch. I know, I know. Usually there’s more back story, but like, haven’t you ever loved a stitch? I’ve had many favorite textured stitches (like the bobble stitch and the loop stitch), but right now, I’m all about the alpine stitch. It creates such incredible texture, especially when crocheted in solid colors. I knew I had to make a chunky cowl to really showcase the stitch and the diamond-y texture it makes. Enter: The Alpine Cowl.

Rounds 2-5: Hdc through the BBO of the first hdc. PM in this st. Then make a hdc through each rem st. When you come to the marked stitch, remove the marker, hdc through the BBO and replace the marker in the new stitch. This marked stitch is to help you know what stitch is the first of each new round. Optional Color change: If you want a cowl that looks just like this one, switch to a new color for rounds 11 and 12. Then switch back to your original color for rounds 13-16.

After finishing round 16, continue with the next round.

Round 17: *Make 1 hdc in the next dcCL, and 1 hdc in the next ch 1-sp. Rep from * to the end of the round. (90 sts)

Rounds 18-22:Hdc through the BBO of the first hdc. PM in this st. Then make a hdc through each rem st. At the end of round 22, remove the marker and make a sc through the BBO of the marked st. Then make a slst through the BBO of the next 2 sts. This will correct the “jog” from crocheting in a spiral.
