Basket Weave Crochet Baby Blanket

If you’re looking for a baby blanket that’s easy to learn and fun to crochet, look no further than the Basket Weave Crochet Baby Blanket. It’s the first baby blanket I ever crocheted and it can be yours too!

The basket weave crochet baby blanket will give you great practice with post stitches which are used to create the basket weave texture. Once you get into a rhythm, the pattern is a breeze to memorize so you can concentrate less and enjoy the process more.

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We’ve prepared a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations you will need to get started as well as a video tutorial demonstrating how to crochet the basket weave crochet stitch and written instructions to complete this project from start to finish.

Basketweave Photo Tutorial

These photos are showing how the basket weave is worked over a multiple of 8 plus 6.

This swatch shows the basketweave crochet stitch set up so that you start and end with the same stitches.

If you look at these photos you will see that the swatch starts with 4 FPdc and ends with 4 FPdc so that it is symmetrical with the exception of the STsc and hdc at the start and end of every row. Those stitches work as an anchor to create a more clean and straight edge.

The scarf pattern above starts with 4 FPdc and ends with 4 BPdc again with the exception of the STsc and hdc at the beginning and end.

Please use these row by row photos below to help you visualize the basketweave crochet stitch.

Watch the video tutorial if you would like to see this stitch created in real time.

Basketweave A New Row Of Blocks

To start a new row of blocks that are the opposite of the first set of blocks do the following.

FIRST ROW: SK 1, BPDC In the first 4 DC’s, then FPDC around the post in the next 4 DC’s stitches repeat all the way across the row. You’ll always finish with 1 DC into the top of the turning chain. Chain 3 and then turn your work.

NEXT ROW: SK 1, FPDC In the first 4 DC’s, then BPDC around the post in the next 4 DC’s stitches repeat all the way across the row. You’ll always finish with 1 DC into the top of the turning chain. Chain 3 and then turn your work.
